Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Winfred Gilbert came to Spokane Falls with his parents in 1891. He attended law school at the University of Michigan, graduating with a law degree in 1899. Gilbert returned to Spokane and began his practice, joining the law firm of Hamblen and Lund, which later became Hamblen and Gilbert. Gilbert continued his practice until 1964. Throughout his life Gilbert was active in Spokane civic affairs, and among other contributions, helped to raise funds for the construction of two Y.M.C.A buildings and the first unit of the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. He served as president of the Spokane Chamber of Commerce, in 1920.

The thirty-three speeches in the Gilbert collection cover a wide range of subjects. As was the case with many early-day lawyers, Gilbert was called upon to deliver a variety of talks, including patriotic, religious, funerary, and commemorative occasions. His speeches include a Forth of July oration at Wilbur, WA, 1902; addresses before various Republican party rallies and events; radio talks in support of various political candidates and issues; sermons to a variety of religious groups; and several anti-war and pro-United Nations talks.
