Historical Note

Harold S. Sweet was a prominent aeronautical and civil engineer who contributed significantly to both academic and industrial engineering fields. Born in Worland, Wyoming, he received a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Wyoming in 1939 and earned his Ph.D. from Purdue University in 1948. Sweet began his academic career as Assistant Professor of Highway Engineering at Purdue (1945–1948) before returning to the University of Wyoming as Professor of Civil Engineering from 1948 to 1953. His involvement in the aeronautics industry began during World War II, when he worked as a research engineer on structural studies for the Constellation and P-80 airplanes. In 1953, he joined Lockheed Corporation, where he remained until his retirement in 1986. At Lockheed, Sweet contributed to major aerospace and defense projects including the C-130 aircraft, Minuteman missile, short haul transport systems, and various space flight initiatives.
