Historical NoteReturn to Top
Founded in 1943 by the US Navy to support a research program and technology development during the Second World War. The UW lab was the second founded during the War after John Hopkins University. The APL operated under a contract with the Office of Scientific Research and Development, but after the War was transferred to the Navy's Bureau of Ordnance. The first director was Dr. Joseph Henderson, and for the first nine years the Lab was under the Department of Physics. Amid debates on the appropriateness of classified research, and during the Korean War in 1952, the University made it a separate unit reporting directly to University central administration through a dedicated Board.
In 1983 the Lab was incorporated into the newly-formed College of Ocean and Fishery Sciences. By this time the US Navy had established their own research capabilities and were less reliant on university-based labs. The APL became less Navy focused and began to expand into an educational mission. In 1993 the APL began to look to the National Science Foundation and NASA to supplement funding which had once come from the Navy.
Over the years the Lab has studied and developed torpedos and related technology, acoustic tracking, sensor systems, and unmanned underwater research. After the 1990s the Lab broaded its scope to include a range of topics from climate to ecosystems and medical technology.
