Historical Note
Benjamin Franklin Dorris (1829-1915) was the mayor of the City of Eugene and a member of the University of Oregon Board of Regents from 1873-1882. Dorris was born in Nashville, Tennessee on December 18, 1825. In 1825 he traveled from New York to San Francisco on the steamship Ohio. In 1868, he left California and settled in Eugene, Oregon. He served as mayor of Eugene twice, was president of the City Council, and was the city Recorder for twenty-two years. He died in his office at the age of 86 of heart disease.

Content Description
The Benjamin F. Dorris "The Genesis of the University of Oregon" collection contains six hand edited, typescript copies for Dorris' historical sketch on the early history of the university. Also included with this material is the title page of Margeret W. Bannard's, "The Founding of the University of Oregon" penned in 1904.
