Historical Note

The Walla Walla Savings Bank was organized at Walla Walla, Washington, in 1889 under the authority of the territorial banking and corporate laws. The major organizer and President of the bank was James K. Edminston, previously a Seattle mortgage broker operating a branch office in Walla Walla. The bank began operations on September 2, 1889 and concentrated its efforts in commercial banking in the wheat trade. The major eastern correspondent was the Chase National Bank of New York City, and operations extended as far as St. Petersburg. Operations continued for slightly over four years with the bank suspending operations on December 9, 1893, its drafts having gone to protest in the general stringency of 1893. From December, 1893 to early 1897 the bank was in the hands of three successive receivers who saw to the liquidation of its affairs.
