Biographical Note
Joseph Simon was born to a Jewish family in Bechtheim, Germany, in 1851, and came to the United States with his family in 1852 and to Portland, Oregon, in 1857. He worked as an attorney in Portland. He served as a member of Portland City Council from 1877 to 1880, and as an Oregon state senator in the 1880s and 1890s. In 1898, he was elected as a United States senator, and he held that office until 1903. After serving in Congress, he was mayor of Portland from 1909 to 1911. He died in 1935.
Content Description
The collection consists of a land certificate, dated July 1889, made out to Oregon attorney and politician Joseph Simon, granting him 160 acres of land in Section 8 of Township 3 North, Range 5 West, in Washington County, Oregon. A receipt attached to the back of the certificate, dated March 24, 1891, attests that the Washington County recorder of conveyances has received the certificate and entered the information into county records.
