Historical Note

Tom Pugh was born on April 26, 1930 in Peoria, Illinois. He worked for the "Peoria Journal Star" as a reporter and editor from 1947-1982. Pugh became a member of the United States Commission on Civil Rights, Illinois Advisory Committee in 1975 and served as Chairperson in 1982. Pugh was a free-lance writer and consultant after retiring in 1982.

Content Description

Collection contains notebooks, slides taken by Pugh to illustrate articles, editorials written by Pugh, files relating to the United States Commission on Civil Rights, correspondence, graduate school and textbook manuscripts, and materials from Pugh’s association with the Human Service Center in Peoria, Illinois. The bulk of the collection contains research files of newspaper and magazine clippings organized by Pugh into subjects including presidential elections, notable individuals, U.S. and world events, and geographic locations covering countries and U.S. states, and cities.

The collection was processed by Mary Ann Meyer in May 2011. After new material was added, the collection was re-processed by Molly Marcusse in July 2015 and updated by Jamie Greene in December 2016 and July 2019.
