- John K. Kasubuchi (1921-2010) was a Japanese American veteran who served in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team during World War II before training at the Military Intelligence Service Language School and serving as a translator in Japan and in the Korean War. This colleciton contains copies of images and certificates related to Kasubuchi's military service dating from approximately 1943 to 1953.

Historical NoteReturn to Top
John Kiyoshi Kasubuchi was born on April 29, 1921 in Toppenish, Washington to Omomatsu and Isa Natsuhara Kasubuchi. He was raised and educated in Shiga-ken, Japan and returned to Pasco, Washington before moving to Salt Lake City, Utah. From there, Kasubuchi was drafted into the United States Army, serving in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team during World War II. Kasubuchi remained in the military, training in the Military Intelligence Service Language School in Fort Snelling, Minnesota, which he completed on February 2, 1946. Kasubuchi was then reassigned to serve as a translator for the 11th Airborne Division in Hokkaido, Japan. During the Korean War, Kasubuchi was reassigned to the 7th Infantry Division to serve as an interrogator for Prisoners of War. He ended his military service in an assignment to the 1st Cavalry Division in Japan. Kasubuchi was honorably discharged from the United States Army on March 12, 1953.
While serving in Hokkaido, Japan, Kasubuchi met and married Matsue Masuko. The couple returned to Salt Lake City, Utah, after Kasubuchi was discharged. Kasubuchi worked as a window fabricator for the Rusco Windows Company, retiring in 1986. Kasubuchi was a member of the Salt Lake Buddhist Temple and the Japanese American Citizens League. John K. Kasubuchi died on June 8, 2010.

The John K. Kasubuchi copy print collection consists of 1 box containing 10 copy prints and photocopies of images and certficiates related to John K. Kasubuchi's service in the United States military during World War II and the years after, from approximately 1943 to 1953. The copies were collected by Mitsugi Kasai for an exhibit on Japanese Americans during World War II.
