Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Born in Portland, Oregon, in 1873, Edith Boyd came to Spokane Falls, Washington Territory, with her parents in 1884. She graduated from South Side High School (since replcaed) in June 1892.
Following graduation from Stanford University in 1897 Boyd taught in the public school system of Spokane almost continuously for 35 years. She witnessed the Great Fire of August 4, 1889 in Spokane.
After her retirement form teaching in 1943 Boyd pursued more actively her life-long interest in writing. Among her numerous works are "Ben Explores Spokane" and "Boy Joe Goes to Sea". The first was written for use primarily in her own classrooms. "Boy Joe" was written in memory of her father, Joseph H. Boyd, in his youth a cabin boy on an English trading ship along the African coast.
Boyd was a charter member of the American Association of university Women and an active participant in that organization's creative writing ghroup. She was named the 1964 Pioneer Woman of the Year by the Eastern Washington Historical Society.
Miss Boyd apparently tended Orpha M. Gardner, a public stenographer, during the latter's illness in 1952. Gardner published considerable poetry in Turquoise Lanterns, a publication of the Spokane Chapter of the American Association of University Women.
Edith Boyd passed away in 1972 at the age of 88.
