Historical Note

The medical practice of Harris and Harris was established in Basin, Wyoming, by brothers George A. Harris and Herbert T. Harris. George (born 1871) came to Basin in 1905. Herbert (born 1879) arrived in 1907, shortly after his marriage to Cornelia Burton of Carlinville, Illinois. Dr. Chester Harris (no relation) joined the partnership in 1912. George Harris joined the United States Army in 1915, afterwards moving to Nebraska. Herbert Harris and Chester Harris continued to practice medicine in Basin until 1936, when both retired.

Herbert and Cornelia Harris were the parents of Burton Harris (born about 1907). Burton Harris attended Dartmouth College, where he developed an interest in the history of Wyoming. While employed by Jones and Laughlin Steel Company of New York as international credit manager, he researched the story of hunter, trapper, and explorer John Colter. In 1952 Burton Harris published "John Colter: His Years in the Rockies".
