Donna Toland Smart is a Utah writer and editor who served as an author for the Relief Society for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and edited Mormon Midwife: The 1846-1888 Diaries of Patty Bartlett Sessions (1997). The Donna Toland Smart photograph collection (1846-1990) contain images related to Sessions life, education, and family; the Relief Society; and her travels, particularly to Egypt. It also contains images collected by Smart during the course of her research into Patty Sessions.

Biographical Note

Donna Toland Smart was born on February 2, 1923. Donna Toland married William B. "Bill" Smart; together, the couple had five children. She received a Bachelor's from the University of Wyoming and a Master of Arts degree in English from the University of Utah in 1981. Smart taught high school in Star Valley, Wyoming, and at East High in Salt Lake City, Utah. She also worked for the University of Utah as a technical writer and served on the Emeritus Board. A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Smart also worked as an author for the Relief Society. Smart edited Mormon Midwife: The 1846-1888 Diaries of Patty Bartlett Sessions, published in 1997.

Content Description

The Donna Toland Smart photograph collection consists of 2 boxes. Box 1 contains images collected by Smart in the course of her research into the life of Patty Bartlett Sessions as well as biographical images related to Smart's life, family, and travels, particularly to Egypt. Box 2 contains additional photographs related to Smart's life, particularly her involvement in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and her work for the Relief Society. The collection dates from 1846-1990, but the majority of the images date from Smart's life, particularly 1970-1990. While most of the images are black-and-white or color photograph prints, the collection also includes slides, negatives, and postcards.
