Historical Note
Gerhard A. Gesell (1910-1993) was a U.S. District Court Judge in Washington D.C. who was known for his work in the Pearl Harbor hearings and Watergate trials. Gesell served as a trial attorney for the Securities and Exchange Commission between 1935 and 1940. He then opened a private practice in Washington D.C. in 1941 and stayed in practice until 1967 when President Lyndon B. Johnson nominated him to the United States District Court. Gesell achieved senor status and served on the court until his death in 1993.

Collection contains material related to his career as a trail attorney for the Securities and Exchange Commission, including the SEC 1941 insurance report material, research on the taxation of life insurance companies, and general materials on insurance company operations.
