Historical Note
James Innes Cowan (1863-1940) and Walter Cowan (1858-1899) were brothers and English immigrants who lived in the United States between the 1880s and 1910s. They owned and operated a farm in Akron, Iowa and a ranch near Saratoga, Wyoming.
Content Description
Collection contains bound copies of James and Walter Cowan’s correspondence, which were transcribed by Walter Cowan’s grandson James O.C. Willson. In the correspondence, the Cowan brothers discuss their business activities, family and personal matters, and the living conditions they encountered in Iowa and Wyoming. The collection also contains an account by Lillias A Cowan of her trip to Iowa (1890), photographs of members of the Cowan family, and a family tree.
