Biographical Note
Kent D. Richards was born in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on August 7, 1938. He attended local public schools in Kenosha and graduated from Kenosha High School in 1956. After graduation he attended Knox College, where he received a bachelor’s degree in history and political science in 1960. Between 1961 and 1966, he studied history at the University of Wisconsin, attaining a Masters and Ph.D. Dr. Richards was hired as a professor of history at Central Washington State College in the fall of 1966. He remained and taught at the college for next thirty-two years before retiring in December of 1997. During his tenure at Central he served as Chair of the History Department between 1975 and 1980 and later as Associate Dean of Graduate Studies and Research.
Content Description
This collection contain information on history department activities at Central Washington University (1967-1994), accreditation reports, Graduate Council records (1975-1987), graduate programs (1969-1978), graduate program assessments (1977-1979), and program and internal department reviews. The papers also contain reports on Multi-cultural Education, curriculum changes, and faculty issues. Included in the collection is a report from the Committee on Black American Culture, reports and memos from Presidents Brooks and Garrity, and the History Department newsletter (1976-1981).
Historical Background
Central Washington University began as the Washington State Normal School in 1891. In 1937, the school was rechristened the Central Washington College of Education. In 1961, the school became Central Washington State College and, finally, in 1977, Central Washington University.
