Biographical Note

Alfred T. Pellicane was born on April 17, 1949 in Brooklyn and lived most of his life in Malverne, New York. An avid fisherman and collector of fishing literature, Pellicane contacted notable fishing authors in the early 1980s for a proposed book of biographies originally to be titled "A Fly Fishers Biography," later changed to "Profiles in Angling Literature." He sent each living prospect a letter explaining his project, a biographical questionnaire, and request for a photograph. He solicited the help of several writers including David Beazley, David Burnett, David L. Hughes, Verlyn Klinkenborg, David Ledlie, Nick Lyons, John Merwin, Joe Pisarro, Paul Schullery, Craig Woods, and Leonard M. Wright, Jr. to assemble information about notable individuals in the history of fishing literature and write biographies from this research and the results of the questionnaires. Al Pellicane wrote many of the biographies himself. The book was never completed. Al Pellicane died July 14, 2001.

Content Description

The Alfred T. Pellicane papers consist of the research materials, handwritten notes, a typed draft manuscript, typed biographical entries (many with correction notes), correspondence, photographs, and related supporting materials assembled for the reference book tentatively titled "Profiles in Angling Literature," and papers related to his interests in fishing and fishing literature. The collection has been arranged into two series. Series 1 consists of materials related to the proposed book including: a typescript of the incomplete manuscript; accounting books; lists of possible individuals to be included with writer's assignments and completion notations; 136 individual files organized alphabetically of authors of the fiction, artistr,y and craftsmanship of fishing through history. Contents of these files differ widely in their contents. Some only have a form letter without any reply and others have extensive notes and information. Files might contain a returned questionnaire from a living writer, a photograph, correspondence exchanged between Pellicane and the subject or relatives, obituaries, a biographical sketch of a notable author of the past, draft versions of the resulting biography with edit notations, and in some cases ephemera and brochures. Series 2 consists of personal writings, correspondence, files of fishing organizations, maps, brochures, catalogs, books, periodicals, newspaper clippings, and a small group of personal papers and memorabilia.
