Biographical Note

The collection was salvaged and organized by Dean Jowers who worked in the field of construction from 1978 to 2014. Jowers was hired as a rental clerk by Symons Corporation in Bellevue, Washington in 1978. The company moved to a location near Marymoor Park in Redmond in 1984 and sold the northwest district of its operation to Mason Supply, Woodinville, Washington, in 1991. Jowers became operations manager for Mason and retired in 2014. Symons has since ceased operations in the region.

Detailed Description of the Collection

  • Series 1, New Pacific Northwest Baseball Park (Seattle) Construction Records, 1997

    Bid documents on what was later called Safeco Field and T-Mobile Park, owned by the Washington State Major League Baseball Stadium Public Facilities District. Safeco Field was a joint venture of Hunt-Kiewit, and association of Huber, Hunt and Nichols, Inc. and Peter Kiewit Construction Company, as well as Naramore, Bain, Brady, and Johanson, (NBBJ). The Park opened in July, 1999.

  • Series 2, Photographs and Slides, approximately 1969-1987

    • Description: Bellevue Railroad Trestle, Bellevue, Washington

      Newkirk Construction, 3 color 35mm slides, one dated Oct. 1972, one dated Jan. 1973, one dated May 1973. The large wooden railroad trestle had to be modified to allow the construction of SE 8th St. to pass under it. The slides show the trestle before, during and after modification.

    • Description: Bonneville Railroad Tunnel, North Bonneville, Washington

      Granite Construction Co., 11 black and white prints, 5" wide by 4" high, dated July 1977, Pacific Northwest Railroad Archive believe these to have to do with the dam rather than any railroad. The photos show the interior of the tunnel being coated with concrete.

      Howard S. Wright Construction, 18 color prints, 5" wide by 3 ½" high, 18 color negatives, approximately 1984. The photos show a climbing system used to get the concrete forms to the upper floors. Columbia Center, Seattle, Washington (batch 2) Howard S. Wright Construction, 21 color prints, 5" wide by 3 ½" high, 22 color negatives, approximately 1984. The photos show the concrete forms in use on the interior of the building.

    • Description: Daon Building, (Marsh and McLennan Building), Seattle, Washington

      Sellen Construction Co., one color print, 10 ¾" wide by 13 ½" high, with matting 16" wide by 19" high . The photo shows the concrete core of the building being poured. The external shell would be constructed around the core.

    • Description: Evergreen College, Olympia, Washington

      Hoffman Construction, 6 color prints, 5" wide by 3 ½" high, 6 color 35mm slides, dated Nov. 1970. The photos are labeled Edison West. They show pan dome forms which are commonly used for parking garages.

      Morrison-Knutson Co., 28 color prints, 5" wide by 3 ½" high, approximately 1984. The photos show the early, middle and later stages of the concrete construction of the dam.

      S. J. Groves Co., one color print, 13 ⅝" wide by 9 ½" high, with matting 19" wide by 15" high, approximately 1980. The photo shows concrete forms in place on the dam.

    • Description: Greenlake Dam and Powerhouse, Sitka, Alaska

      S. J. Groves Co., 72 color prints, 5" wide by 3 ½" high, approximately 1980. The photos show the use of concrete forms in the construction of the dam from the early stages to near completion.

    • Description: Hanford Nuclear Waste Storage Tanks, Hanford, Washington

      Contractor not known, 2 color prints, 7" wide by 5" high, 2 color 35mm slides that match the 2 color prints, 8 color prints, 5" wide by 3 ½" high with no matching slides, 4 color 35mm slides with no matching prints, approximately May 1969. Prints and slides show the storage tanks being constructed. They are being built at the bottom of a very large hole. The tanks are steel and to be encapsulated in concrete before being covered with earth. They are now famous for leaking.

    • Description: Lucky Friday Mine, Wallace, Idaho

      Contractor not known, one color print, 5" wide by 3 ½" high, approximately 1970's. The print appears to show construction of the 18' diameter shaft mentioned in their website. The tower in the background of the print is the same as shown on their website.

    • Description: Martin Marietta Aluminum Plant, Goldendale, Washington

      Kaiser Engineers, one color print, 15 ½" wide by 13 ½ high, with matting 19" wide by 16" high, approximately 1981. The photo shows the beginnings of construction to double the capacity of the plant. The new structure was approximately ¼ mile long.

      Kaiser Engineers, one color print, 13 ¾" wide by 10 ½" high, with matting 19" wide by 16" high, approximately 1981. The photo shows a special form, constructed of common forms, to pour a particular section of the building.

    • Description: Mercer Island I-90 cut, Mercer Island, Washington

      Contractor not known, 36 color 35mm slides, dated Nov 1987. The slides are of the preparatory work done prior to the pouring of the concrete walls that line both sides of the highway.

      Contractor not known, 33 color 35mm slides, dated Nov. 1987. The slides show the concrete forms in place, the pouring of the concrete and the textured wall after the forms are removed.

    • Description: National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Western Regional Center, Seattle, Washington

      Next to Warren G. Magnuson Park, Contractor not known, one color print, 5" wide by 3 ½" high, approximately 1970's. The site is the old Sand Point Naval Air Station. The background shows Lake Washington and the area of Kirkland, Houghton and Yarrow Point.

    • Description: Prudential Building, Seattle, Washington

      Contractor not known, 42 color prints, 5" wide by 3 ½" high, 26 color negatives, approximately 1986. The photos show the concrete forms for pouring the internal columns of the building. One photo appears to show the Sinking Ship Parking Garage (Pioneer Square District - Seattle) in the background.

    • Description: Renton Wastewater Treatment Plant, Renton, Washington

      S. J. Groves Construction, 5 color 35mm slides, not dated. The photos show the construction of part of the plant which is now part of King County South Treatment Plant.

    • Description: Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, SeaTac, Washington

      Contractor not known, 4 color 35mm slides, dated June 1971. Appears to be the construction of the underground shuttle tunnel that connects the North and South satellites to the main terminal. Riding the shuttle you can still see the distinctive lines and tie holes left by the type of concrete form used in construction.

    • Description: Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, SeaTac, Washington

      Contractor not known, 9 color 35mm slides, approximately 1970, appears to be the construction of the entry to the main terminal and the parking garage. In one of the photos of the parking garage, the shape of the ceiling is the same as in the photos from Evergreen College.

    • Description: Sheraton Hotel, Seattle, Washington

      Howard S. Wright Construction, 63 color prints, 5" wide by 3 ½" high, 33 color negatives, approximately 1982. The photos show the concrete forms being used on the interior and exterior columns, as well as the floors. One photo shows a peekaboo view of Alki point in the background. Many others have surrounding buildings in the background.

    • Description: Timberline Lodge, Mount Hood, Oregon

      Contractor not known, one color print, 5" wide by 3 ½" high, approximately 1980. The photo shows concrete forms in the initial stage of construction of the structure across the parking lot from the main lodge. This is a part of an expansion program to handle the increased volume of visitors.

    • Description: University Plaza Condominium, 4540 8th Ave. NE, University District, Seattle, Washington

      Baugh Construction, 22 black and white prints, 5" wide by 3 ½" high, 2 color 35mm slides dated Nov 73. The photos show the flying system used to pour the walls and ceiling of each unit. Lake Union and Queen Ann are visible in some of the photos. That allowed me to pinpoint the location and compare the structure in the photos to the one that is there today and get a match.

      Unknown contractor, one color print, 10 ½ " wide by 13 ½" high, with matting 16" wide by 19" high, approximately 1982. The photo shows the use of flat modular concrete forms being used to form a round tank.

    • Description: Wastewater Treatment Plant, Oregon City, Oregon

      Paul Lawrence Construction Co., one color print, 14" wide by 11" high, with matting 19" wide by 16" high, approximately 1982. The photo shows the construction of a round concrete tank. All of the above standard size prints and slides fit into a box 13" long by 5 ½" high by 6 ¼" wide. The oversize prints are in a box that is 21" long by 17" wide by 2 ½" deep.
