Historical Note

A national organization, founded in 1868 to provide health and fraternal benefits to its members, the AOUW existed for many years to insure working class men and their families.  The Spokane chapter was organized in 1881.

Content Description

The collection consists of applications to the Order for beneficiary certificates, 1887-1930.  Information on the application includes birth and country or state of origin, occupation, and complete medical examiner’s report.  Certificates from the late 1890s have an added profile question:  “Do you intend going to Alaska or N.W.T?”  Among the applicants is theatre promoter John W. Considine.
