Description: Two men sitting on fallen tree at Twin Lakes Camp writing "Notes for the Appalachians"
Written on opposite page: Twin Lakes Song. Dedicated to Crissie Cameron by Mrs. Frazeur./ How dear to my heart is the camp-site at Twin Lakes/ When fond recollection presents it to view./ The ice covered water, the snow fields above it,/ And e'en the soft fog banks of silvery hue./ The loved commissary, the stream that flowed 'neath it,/ The green grassy ledge where we spread out our beds./ The lone trail that wound far away o'er the hillside,/ And e'en the pack horses that grazed round our heads./ The brown ones, the bay ones, The lean hungry gray ones,/ The grass nipping horses That grazed round our heads!/ At midnight we chased them in sheer desperation/ Till they faded away in a dark gloomy dell./ But scarce had we time to allay our vexation/ Again they returned to the haunts loved so well,/ With snorting and neighing in glad satisfaction/ While helpless we lay till break of the dawn./ Resolved in our minds to pack over-weight dunnage/ On the backs of those horses encircling our lawn!/ Oh the brown ones, the bay ones, The sociable gray ones/ The pesky pack horses That grazed on our lawn!

Written on opposite page: Hannegan Pass--The most welcome spot on the Sky-line trip./ Oh Hannegan Pass, Hannegan Pass/ Why the devil did we come to Hannegan Pass?/ We climbed over mountains, we crept along ledges,/ We slid down the gorges, we jumped over ditches,/ And all the fair sisters are nursing their blisters./ And some of them laughed and some of them cried./ And some of them say that they just nearly died./ And it took all our horses and all our brave men/ To gather our sisters in camp by ten./ -- Edgar E. Description: Mount Shuksan
Written on opposite page: THE CHANT OF SHUKSAN/ I'm the crag-crowned King of the North Cascades/ In my power is the avalanche,/ I shake my head and the glaciers fall/ While the cheeks of mortals blanch./ The rocks and snow, I hurl below/ 'Till they fall in a grinding dust/ While my crags hold high, --under cloud or sky/ They tower with a mighty thrust./ Twice mortals have dared to climb my steep/ And stand on my mighty head./ I laughed as they toiled, for their puny hearts/ I vouchsafed them rest on my kingly crest/ Then I filled their souls with fear;/ They fled below over ice and snow,/ As my hour of wrath drew near./ For myriad years my towering peak/ Has scorned the lightning flash/ While storm and wind have howled in vain/ As they charged with futile dash./ What mortal bold or Storm King old/ Can cope with my ominous might!/ I stand crag-crowned, o'er the hills around,/ I'm the King of the day and night! ---MELODY: La la la ti do re mi fa mi/ mi mi mi re do do la/ So do re mi fa so la so/ Fa mi re do do la/ So do so do so do so do/ La do la do do la/ La la la ti do re mi fa mi/ mi mi mi re do do la --- JTH.

Description: "The Moon At Hannegan" Poem
Text of poem: When we have turned our ear from forest call,/ When on the mountains the distant curtains fall,/ When we are weary with thought of coming strife,/ When we are facing dull routine called life,/ We will not falter 'tho the way seem drear./ We will gain courage in a memory dear./ We will think at twilight of the campfire low/ Where the smouldering flashes gently dart and glow./ We will sing of comrades, of valley, peak, and glen./ And the moon at Hannegan will shine again,/ Will shine clear again./ When the sands of life have almost ceased to flow,/ When in our hearts we know that soon we'll go,/ To that strange realm beyond the farthest star,/ Where deeds are counted at a Judgement Bar/ We will not falter, 'tho the way seem drear,/ We will take courage from a memory dear./ We will think of campfires of the long ago/ Of the song of comrades in the flash and glow./ Then our hearts will waken to the hope that afar/ Another moon like Hannegan will light the Bar,/ Will shine above the bar.
