Historical Note

The Northern Pacific Hospital, run by the Northern Pacific Beneficial Association, was constructed in 1884 on North Second Street in Missoula, Montana. The hospital treated employees of the Northern Pacific Railroad. Dr. I. E. Cohn was the first Surgeon in Charge, followed by Dr. N. N. Horton in 1885 and Dr. John J. Buckley in 1887. The hospital burned down in 1892 and was rebuilt in 1893. Another fire in 1916 damaged the second building, and a new brick structure replaced it the following year. In 1967, the Northern Pacific Beneficial Association authorized a name change for the hospital, and it became Missoula General Hospital. Missoula General Hospital eventually closed its doors in 1985, and the building was torn down.
