Historical Note
Until the 1950s, Utah had been a Democratic-leaning state. For two decades the state's support had gone to the Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry Truman administrations. As the 1950s came, a shift occured. Many Utah citizens did not trust the new Democratic Presidential candidate, Adlai Stevenson, and were tired of fighting the Korean War. Utah thus shifted its stance towards the Republican party and gave Dwight D. Eisenhower a large majority. For the rest of the 1950s, the Republicans were dominant in both national and local races.
Content Description
The Utah elections collection (1954-1956) contains various political pamplets and literature from national and Utah campaigns in the 1950s. Other items include correspondence, lists, and newsletters. The materials show Utah's shift into the Republican camp.
