Historical Note

The First National Bank of Kalispell (Mont.) was chartered on June 19, 1891. Anticipating the establishment of the city of Kalispell, William C. Whipps had opened the Northwestern Bank in nearby Demersville in 1891 to be ready to open a bank as soon as the new townsite was platted. The original officers of the First National Bank were Aaron Hirshfield, president; G.H. Adams, vice president; W. C. Whipps, cashier; and George M. Huffaker, assistant cashier. Hirshfield was succeeded as president by Adams in 1895, and in 1896 by D.R. Peeler. In 1898 Whipps resigned as cashier and was replaced by assistant cashier R.E. Webster. In addition to their involvement with the First National Bank, several officers were active in the City of Kalispell government. W.C. Whipps served as mayor, and cashiers George M. Huffaker and R.E. Webster served as city treasurer. In 1895 the bank was briefly involved in the liquidation of the Libby mercantile business of A.B. Johnston. Originally founded by C.F.W. Hall, the store was taken over in May 1894 by A.B. Johnston. In late 1894 he assigned his assets to the First National Bank which in turn assigned them to James F. Vogt.
