Content Description

Voitto Arnold Luukkonen was a student at the University of Idaho from 1936 to 1939. This collection includes some of the engineering papers he turned in to fulfill class assignments.

Historical Note

Voitto Arnold Luukkonen was born on October 26, 1918 in Butte, Montana to Finnish parents Eino and Hilja Lankinen Luukkonen. At some point during his childhood, he and his family moved to Shoshone County, Idaho where he went to Mullan High School.

He attended the University of Idaho from 1936 to 1939 to pursue a Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering. Voitto was a member of the Phi Eta Sigma fraternity, the Associated Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the American Society of Civil Engineers. During his time at the university he stayed in Willis Sweet Hall on the U of I campus.

After graduation he moved to Massachusetts and eventually married Dorothy Elaine Snow. Viotto was employed at the Springfield Massachusetts Armory for twenty-seven years. Later he became a Mechanical Engineer at Rock Island Arsenal which was located in the middle of Davenport, Iowa and Rock Island, Illinois. He worked here for five years, and then retired in 1973. Voitto passed away on January 20, 1996 in Davenport, Iowa.
