Historical Note

Jarold Ramsey grew up on a ranch near Madras, Oregon. Received his Ph.D. from the University of Washington with studies in American Indian literature, Shakespeare, and modern poetry. Ramsey taught at the University of Washington, the University of Victoria (Canada), and the University of Rochester, NY. His poetry collections include Love in an Earthquake, Hand Shadows, and Where the Wind Comes to Play (with Bill Baber); among his prose books are Coyote Was Going There, Reading the Fire, and New Era: Reflections on the Human and Natural History of Central Oregon. Ramsey and William Stafford maintained a close friendship throughout their adult lives.
