Biographical Note
Jeff Goldberg was the founder of Contact magazine in the early 1970s. The magazine became the de-facto forum of literary and artistic expression by the emerging “Electric Generation”—a small cadre of post-beat and pre-punk artists and writers centered in Philadelphia and New York City. These included the writers and performers Victor Bockris and Andrew Wylie who often collaborated as “Bockris-Wylie,” Otis Brown, Marty Watt, and Goldberg himself. Jeff Goldberg went on to build a career as a journalist and author while Andrew Wylie became a well-known literary agent. Victor Bockris continued to write, producing biographies of Andy Warhol, The Velvet Underground, and Patti Smith.
Content Description
The collection contains correspondence, photographs, newspapers, clippings, and ephemera produced by influential members of the “Electric Generation.” Prominent among these materials is a set of correspondence between Jeff Goldberg and Victor Bockris dating from 1973 to 1974.
