Historical Note

Cabbage Lane is eighty acres of ridge and canyon forest land near Wolf Creek, Oregon. It is off the grid with no electricty, limited cell reception, a small creek, and only occasional running water. It was conceptualized by three women in 1973 who envisioned a woman-centered land and life culture. They negotiated land use with a community of gay men who lived nearby and signed a ninety-nine year lease agreement in 1974. Cabbage Lane, Inc., an Oregon non-profit, was established in 1992 and considered a land trust, often referred to as "CLLT" or Cabbage Lane Land Trust." Residency on the land has waxed and waned, with particular years of flourishing occurring in the 1970s and again in the 1990s. In the early 2000s, a small group of women organized a Board of Directors and took responsibility for raising funds for road reconstruction, infrastructure repairs, cleanup, and outreach. In 2020, this group of women passed stewardship onto two new caretakers, "Debbi" and "Jessi," and signed a land use agreement granting the two women a life estate and ensuring that, upon their deaths or departure, the land would revert back to Cabbage Lane or to another women=centered 501(c)(3) organization. At the time of stewardship transfer, the land was renamed Cabbage Canyon while the non-profit remained Cabbage Lane.
