Historical Note

The United States purchased Alaska from Russia in 1867. Initially the Department of Alaska (1867-1884), then the District (1884-1912), the Second Organic Act in 1912 designated it the Territory of Alaska. Alaska's first statehood bill was introduced in 1916, but it failed due to low population and lack of interest. World War II and the discovery of oil, along with a rise in population, led to greater interest in statehood, and Alaska was admitted as the 49th state on January 3, 1959.
