Historical Note

Lucile M. Wright was an aviatrix, philanthropist, and airport executive from Jamestown, New York during the twentieth century. A graduate of Washington University and Georgetown University Law School, Wright learned to fly as a young woman. During World War II, she served as a pilot in the U.S. Civil Air Patrol. Wright remained active in the aviation field after the war, serving as chairwoman of the Jamestown Municipal Airport Commission and as a public relations representative of the American Association if Airport Executives. She also was a member of various aviation societies like the Ninety-Nines, an international organization of women pilots that promotes advancement of aviation through education, scholarships, and mutual support. In addition to her aviation activities, Wright was an ardent philanthropist. She was the founder and president of the Jamestown Girls Club and an active member and donor to various organizations such as the Girls Club of America and Zonta. She was married to John H. Wright, who was a Jamestown businessman and the president of Jamestown Telephone Corporation and Wright’s Motion Picture Company.
