Historical Note

Glenn Walker Wallace (1898-1988) was the daughter of Matthew Henry Walker, one of the four Walker brothers who made their mark on Utah through banking and mining ventures. Matthew H. Walker was a co-founder and first president of the Walker Bank and Trust Company. Glenn Wallace attended Winsor School in Boston and received a teacher's diploma from the Fox-Buonamici School of Piano Forte Playing. In 1920, she married John McChrystal Wallace; together, they had two children. Wallace was a prominent musician and dancer. She co-founded the Utah Symphony (1939) and Ballet West (1962) and served terms as president for both institutions. Wallace received the honor of Grand Cross Dame of the Knightly Order of St. Brigitte in 1967 and was inducted into the Venerable Order of St. John of Jerusalem in 1970, among other honors. She was also recipient of honorary degrees from Westminster College and the University of Utah.

John McChrystal Wallace (1893-1989) was the son of William Ross and Annie McChrystal Wallace. A prominent banker and philanthropist, Wallace was also a Salt Lake City mayor and Utah senator. He graduated from the University of Utah in 1916 and received his master of business administration from Harvard Graduate School in 1921. He served with distinction as a commissioned lieutenant in World War I and later was a civilian aide to the U.S. Secretary of the Army.

He was president and chairman of Walker Bank and founder of the organization that became First Interstate Bank. He was also a long-time board member of Westminster College and Western Airlines. In 1986, he was honored by Harvard for his 65 years as a entrepreneur. Wallace was a Shriner, a member of the Rotary Club, American Legion, Wasatch Lodge, Chamber of Commerce, Sigma Chi Fraternity, and the Salt Lake Country Club. Among the charities that Glenn and John Wallace supported were Holy Cross Hospital, Ballet West, the Utah Symphony, United Way, and the Salt Lake Homeless Shelter. In 1926, Wallace co-founded the Salt Lake Community Chest. In 1963, he was inducted into the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem. In 1987, John was honored as a "United Way Exemplar," and he and Glenn were honored by the Catholic Community Service Council.

Glenn Walker Wallace died on December 30, 1988. John McChrystal Wallace died on February 7, 1989.

Content Description

This collection reflects the lives and accomplishments of two of Salt Lake's most prominent benefactors: Glen Walker Wallace and John McChrystal Wallace. Although the photographs were originally separated into two different collections, it was decided to keep them together as one collection organized by distinct sections. This structure recognizes them as individuals with their own accomplishments and contributions, but also recognizes them as a team who supported one another in their endeavors.

The decision to keep the material from both Glenn Wallace and John McChrystal Walker was revisited in 2025 when adding addenda. Rather than separate the collections, archivists decided to respect the original decision and keep the two collections together. Though the collection was not rearranged, archivists added subseries to the existing series order to further clarify which material relates to Glenn Wallace and her family history, and which material relates to John McChrystal Walker and the Walker family history.

The arrangement information produced by the original processors is as follows:

The collection begins with the photographs of the Walker family in Box 1, including Glenn's father, Matthew H. Walker, and their home in Yeadon, England. Please note that due to late identification of the items, the photographs of the Rob Walker house in Salt Lake are found in Box 2, Folder 23, and were not added to these early Walker materials. Following are photographs dealing specifically with Glenn Walker Wallace and her accomplishments as a musician, ballerina, and honored patron of the arts in Salt Lake City. Included are photographs of Mrs. Wallace receiving the honor of Grand Cross Dame of the Knightly Order of St. Brigitte in 1967, being inducted to the Venerable Order of St. John of Jerusalem in 1970, and receiving her honorary doctorate from the University of Utah in 1975. Unfortunately, there are no photographs relating specifically to her contribution to the arts with the exception of a rather poor group of proofs of Ballet West on tour.

The next section, beginning in Box 1 and completed in Box 2 illustrates John McChrystal Wallace and his achievements as a civic leader and entrepreneur. The section begins with a photo of the Henry Wallace family (John's great-grandfather), and photos of John's parents, William R. and Annie McChrystal Wallace. Following are photos related specifically to John McChrystal Wallace, including photos with business partners, and with other dignitaries such as Marriner S. Eccles, Chairman of the Federal Reserve during the Roosevelt Administration, and Stewart Udall, Secretary of the Interior under Johnson. Because business partners could not be identified, and because of the large number of enterprises in which Wallace was involved, no attempt was made to separate the photos by these subjects, but they were arranged chronologically as much as possible. Following this are photos of Wallace receiving his honorary doctorate from the University of Utah in 1965, and then photos that were identified as specifically relating to Western Airlines, Walker Bank and his mining interests.

The final section, ending Box 2, reflects their lives together, and contains photos of the Wallaces together with their children. Also in this section are photos of the Wallace home on Walker Lane in Cottonwood, some of their friends, including Gina Bachauer, and finally, miscellaneous and unidentified photographs.

Box 3 contains oversized items, mostly portraits, that are arranged in a similar manner as the rest of the collection.

For Biographical information see Box 5 of the Wallace papers; Box 2 of the Walker papers; and Jonathan Bliss' work Miners and Merchants in Utah: The Walker Brothers and Their Bank, available in Western Americana.

Please note: Each photograph is numbered with box number, folder number, and item number. For example, 2: 7: 3: refers to Box 2, Folder 7, items 3.
