Historical Note

The Salt Lake City School District covers Salt Lake City proper and operated thirty-six schools in 2005. As with most school districts in Utah, the first schools were based on LDS wards and operated by the LDS Church. In 1890 the Utah Territorial Legislature passed a bill making state schools mandatory. Most of the old Mormon-run schools passed into the authority of the state and the LDS Church sold off its last secondary schools by 1933. Since then the Salt Lake City School District has grown immensly to a 2005 student population of about 24,000. The Salt Lake City School District Board directs the operation of the District as provided by the Utah Constitution and is elected locally.
