Historical Note

A.J. “Jack” Wolff was a railroad enthusiast with interests in railroad photography and history. He was born on February 24, 1945, in Allentown, Pennsylvania. The family moved and settled in Cheyenne, Wyoming, where Wolff was raised. Wolff attended the University of Wyoming, earning his bachelor’s degree in 1967 and his master’s degree in 1974. He worked for the Wyoming state government for 20 year before retiring in 1995. After retirement Wolff was able to pursue his passion for railroad photography and history. He became known for his photographs of railroads, engines, and locomotives. Wolff would also write three books: “Union Pacific’s Sherman Hill in the Diesel Era,” “Union Pacific’s Turbine Era,” and “Union Pacific’s Cheyenne Facilities 1868-2015.” A.J. “Jack” Wolff passed away on August 3, 2022, in Cheyenne, Wyoming.
