Biographical Note

Charles Colin Patrick was born in 1879 in McGregor, Iowa, and attended Amherst College in Massachusetts. From 1901 to 1904, he worked as a foundryman in Des Moines, Iowa. In 1904, he moved to Oregon, where he worked at a sawmill in Astoria from 1904 to 1907, then was a cashier and manager of the First State Bank of Independence from 1907 to 1910. From 1910 to 1912, he was the sales manager for the Bridal Veil Lumbering Company, and then the sales manager for the Douglas Fir Sales Company. In 1915, he established his own lumber firm, the Patrick Lumber Company, in Portland.

Patrick married Mary Letitia Bechtel (1887-1978) in 1911; the couple had three children. C. C. Patrick died in 1960.

Content Description

The collection consists of the papers of C. C. Patrick, a lumber businessman from Portland, Oregon. The majority of these papers relate to Patrick's career in the lumber industry, including records of his firm, the Patrick Lumber Company. Patrick Lumber Company records include lists of potential international clients; contracts and a letter relating to a dispute the firm had with the Calmar Steamship Corporation; records of the firm's activities during World War II; and advertisements. Other lumber-related papers include records of the Bridal Veil Lumbering Company and the Douglas Fir Sales Company, both of which Patrick worked for; specifications for lumber treatment and materials regarding timber prices and sales that span multiple phases of Patrick's career; and organization and reorganization plans for the Southern Forest Lumber Company and the Chas. K. Spaulding Lumber Company. Other papers in the collection consist of political materials, including correspondence between Patrick and 1940 U.S. Republican presidential candidate Wendell Willkie; unsorted business and personal papers; and letterhead stationery.
