Historical NoteReturn to Top

Harold J. Barnett, b. 1917, economist, wrote extensively about natural resources and their relationship to population growth, national and global economy, and United States security. His work began in the early fifties with his refutation of Malthusian economics. His study documented that the U.S. economy did not suffer with increasing population or use of natural resources, but in fact strengthened during these years. Barnett began his career with Rand Corporation and later entered academics with positions at Wayne State in Detroit, Michigan and Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. He served on various economic committees in Washington D. C., and was a frequent expert at congressional economic hearings. His studies include work during the oil crisis and rise in sugar prices, both in the early seventies, and the decline of American manufacture of steel. He also wrote of the advantages of cable television as a marketing tool during the infancy of that industry. Barnett’s work included an evaluation of the Chinese economy at the outset of the Maoist Revolution. Frequently requested at economic conferences, Barnett was a speaker on a wide range of natural resource topics in the United States, Western and Eastern Europe before the breakup of the Soviet Union, Israel and Mexico. His publications range from the 1950s through 1984.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The collection includes Barnett’s research material, book and monograph manuscripts, speech drafts and conference notes. It also contains reference materials on his studies for Scarcity and Growth, and his bauxite and China papers, plus analysis material from his “Input-Output” writings. The collection contains numerous news clippings Barnett gathered for his different subjects. Correspondence includes the only extant letters for Scarcity and Growth, and other letters documenting Barnett’s contributions during U.S. economic policy making. Also in the collection are copies of his numerous speeches and published monographs. Research topics are arranged in alphabetical order as Barnett originally labeled his files or were labeled according to most easily recognized material from his filing system. A single oversized box contains data as collected by Barnett for his research on natural resources in the 1950s.
