Biographical Note
Jack Gale Webb was born November 9, 1912 in Pasadena, California to George Washington and Gladys Jackson Webb. He graduated from San Diego State University and in March of 1934, he married Hildreth “Dottie” Osborne.
Jack began his career with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in 1942 as a flight inspection pilot on Los Angeles, California. During his thirty two years of experience with the FAA he held several leadership positions including Director of Flight Standard Controllers, Section Chief and then Section Division Chief of the Washington DC headquarters, Deputy Director of the Southern Region Headquarters and Director of the FAA’s national Aviation Facilities Experimental Center in Atlantic City. In 1970 he became Director of the Alaskan Region and directed the Pacific-Asia Region in 1972 until he retired in 1975.
Hildreth “Dottie” Osborn Webb was born May 18, 1914 to William Leroy and Hildreth Maloney Osborn in Somerville Massachusetts. After spending the first ten years of her life in Massachusetts, Dottie moved to Pasadena, California where she later married Jack Webb. During their marriage, Dottie accompanied Jack in his career with the FAA and served as the honorary president of the FAA Women’s Club.
Together, Jack and Dottie Webb had two children, Jack Webb, Jr. and Marilynne Wright. Jack passed away on November 6, 1990 in his home in Bloomington, Utah. His wife, Dottie died on June 7, 2001.
Content Description
This collections contains the papers of Jack G. Webb, former director of the Federal Administration Association (FAA) Pacific-Asia and Alaskan regions, and his wife, Hildreth “Dottie” Osborn Webb. As Jack spent several years working for the FAA with the companionship of his wife, the collection consists of several materials from Jack’s career relating to the FAA and may be beneficial to anyone researching aviation in the united states.
The papers are divided into four categories: personal and professional papers of Jack and Hildreth Webb, pilot logs and related materials, scrapbooks, and oversized: awards and certificates to Jack and Dottie Webb with FAA-related materials.
The personal and professional papers consist of two archival boxes of assorted materials dealing with Jack’s career in the FAA (professional papers), correspondence, awards and certificates, and some personal papers of Jack and Dottie Webb.
The pilot logs are contained in one box and ordered chronologically. The logs include information from the year after Jack began working for the FAA (1943) until 1962.
Boxes four through seven carry the scrapbooks of Jack and Hildreth Webb, including photos from Jack’s career, the Hawaiian Open Golf Tournament which Jack and Dottie participated in along with American Professional Golfer Jack Nicklaus, and Vice-president Herbert Humphrey’s trip to the Pacific-Asia region during Jack’s time as director there.
The last box consists of several oversized awards and certificates given to Jack and Dottie Webb over the course of their career with the FAA.
