Biographical Note

John de Groot is a playwright and journalist based in Florida. His one-man play about Ernest Hemingway, Papa, premiered in 1988 at Boise State University starring George Peppard. The production went on to Cleveland, Atlanta, and Chicago, and was subsequently produced in New York in 1996 and Los Angeles in 2005. James Earl Jones read the script as part of Hemingway's 100th birthday celebration at the Smithsonian.

De Groot's 5-year research process resulted in a collection of hundreds of books and periodicals by and about Hemingway, and included travel throughout the world to Hemingway's homes and favorite vacation spots including the Bahamas, Key West, Cuba, and Ketchum, Idaho.

Content Description

The John de Groot Papers and Collection on Ernest Hemingway primarily consist of research materials collected by playwright and journalist John de Groot for his 1988 play about Hemingway, Papa. The collection dates from 1942-2006 and contains materials both by and about Hemingway including books, magazines, LPs, audio cassettes, and memorabilia.

Of particular interest are copies of United States government correspondence and internal FBI memoranda relating to Ernest Hemingway, obtained by John de Groot under the terms of the Freedom of Information Act. The files focus on Hemingway's activities in Spain during the Spanish Civil War, alleged Communist contacts, and his intelligence work in Cuba during World War II. Many documents have been censored.

The collection includes a manuscript of de Groot's play, Dark Ages, and contains an audio recording of de Groot's comments on items from his collection featured in the exhibit "A Hemingway Geography" at Boise State in 1988.

While the collection is predominantly in English, some materials are in Spanish and French.

Forms part of the Idaho Writers Archive.
