Historical Note

Dorothy Harvey, a knowledgable advocate for wilderness areas and wildlife, had worked on land management issues since the 1970s. She, along with others, formed organizations such as Citizens for a Responsible CUP (later the Intermountain Water Alliance) to inform the public of what effects the Central Utah Project would have on land, wildlife, and recreation. Harvey, a resident of Wisconsin, also lived in Utah from 1980 to 1986. She wrote reports and articles, gave speeches, and conducted countless surveys in order to better inform Utah's population concerning the project. The project itself was divided into several units, the biggest being the Bonneville Unit. The collection focuses mainly on this unit, although the other units are represented as well.

Content Description

The Dorothy Harvey papers (1902-2005) are a collection of material focusing on the Central Utah Project (CUP), a water resource development program designed to beneficially use a sizable portion of Utah's alloted share of the Colorado River. The project is located in central and east central part of the state.

Included in the collection is personal correspondence and information on Dorothy Harvey and her family; her writing drafts and notes for an unpublished book on CUP; papers resulting from her involvement with various organizations, including federal documents; project litigation materials; subject files; and news clippings, newsletters, programs, brochures, and maps. Many subjects are represented in more than one area of the collection. As a notation, the words "Uinta" and "Uintah" are synonymous.
