Biographical Note
Michigan-born Lee Pickett (1882-1959) moved in 1910 to the Cascade Mountains town of Index in Snohomish County, Washington. He photographed the construction of some of the first passable roads in the county, and during the 1920s he worked for the Great Northern Railway Company, documenting improvements in the line. A major improvement was the construction of the eight-mile Cascade Tunnel from Berne to Scenic as protection against avalanches and adverse weather. After the project was finished, Pickett returned to freelance work, often taking logging and mining camp photographs for insurance purposes. Early in his career Pickett spelled his name with one t and later added a second t to his signature. Pickett quit photography in the late 1940s and died in 1959.
Content Description
The Lee Pickett collection documents scenes from Snohomish, King and Chelan Counties in Washington State from the early 1900s to the 1940s. This includes the towns and people of Index, Gold Bar, Scenic, and Sultan. Local industries such as the Heybrook Lumber Co. and Index Granite Works are also depicted. A large number of his photographs reflect the program undertaken by the Great Northern Railway Company in the 1920s to improve the line over the Cascade Mountains.
