Historical Note

The Spokane Chapter of the Greater Federation of Women’s Clubs was incorporated in 1905 and was one of a national organization devoted to women’s activities. This collection of scrapbooks is evidence to a wide range of pursuits, from local and social pastimes such as book reviews and card parties, local and state government involvement such as hosting political debates, philanthropic pursuits such as the Gerontology Project, and on to more global activities such as involvement in an anniversary party for the Embassy of the former republic of Ceylon.

Membership into the Spokane Women’s Club was local. The choices for activities and other involvements were made based upon the local atmosphere and prevailing attitudes and, as such, these choices serve as an indicator of these attitudes and values. As the contents of these scrapbooks indicate, there was a gradual shift in the nature of the club’s activities from the earlier, 1950s, more local and social pursuits to, in later years, 1960s and1970s, activities which went beyond the region to include state, national and international.
