Biographical Note
Boyer Gonzales, Sr was born on September 22, 1864 in Houston, Texas. His father was a successful cotton broker and the family was able to vacation extensively around the country and in Mexico, including business trips to Seattle. He showed artistic talent at a young age and in 1888 he met Winslow Homer who would become a close friend and artistic influence. In 1894 he received his first formal artistic training and in 1901 he sold his father's cotton firm to devote more time to painting. Throughout his travels to Europe, Mexico and his home town in Texas he was a very active painter, specializing in marine subjects. This included knowledge of marine wildlife and ship construction. In 1912 he built a studio in New York and continued to travel throughout his life. He died on February 14, 1934.
