Historical Note

James John "Jim" Sawdey was born on April 4, 1916 in Hill City, Minnesota, to Rosalie Leipold and Mahlon William Sawdey. Jim Sawdey married Elinor Kathleen Meier (1920-2011); together, they had two children. Sawdey registered for the United States Military in 1941 and served in the 87th Infantry Regiment and the 10th Mountain Division. The 87th Infantry Regiment was activated in December 1941 as the 87th Mountain Infantry Battalion, the first unit dedicated to mountain warfare in the United States. Soldiers were recruited for their experience with skiing, and trained at Mount Rainier, Washington and Camp Hale, Colorado. The 87th Regiment became a division of the 10th Light Division (Alpine), constituted on July 10, 1943 and redesignated the 10th Mountain Division on November 6, 1945. The 87th Infantry arrived in Napes, Italy on January 13, 1945 to fight in the Italian Campaign. Sawdey was injured at Mount Belvedere and received a Purple Heart medal for his service. Jim Sawdey died on November 7, 1999 in Fall River Mills, California.

Content Description

The James John Sawdey photograph collection was donated in two albums. The photographs were removed from the first album for preservation purposes. The removed photographs were placed in folders 1 through 17 and labeled by subject, but original order of the album has been maintained and handwritten captions were preserved and kept with the photographs they describe. Many of the photographs are captioned on the backs in pencil, likely by Sawdey's children. According to a caption, many (perhaps all) of the photographs were taken by and the album compiled by a Corporal Gambel: Caption from album reads "Chronicles of the 10th Mtn. Division World War II Guitigliano, It. Feb. 1945 Corp. Gambel-Jeep driver-photographer."

The second album has brown leather-like covers embossed with "Jim Sawdey" and "McClellan Field, Calif." The pages, which are made of black construction-type paper, contain black-and-white photograph prints primarily depicting Jim Sawdey and other members of the 87th Infantry Regiment and the 10th Mountain Division skiing and in the snow during their training in mountain and winter combat techniques at Mount Rainier, Washington, Alaska, and Camp Hale, Colorado.
