Historical Note

The Pacific Northwest Political Science Association was established in 1947, holding its first meeting in 1948 at Reed College. The purpose of the association was to help establish Political Science as a viable academic discipline. The primary activity of the PNPSA was an annual conference where academic papers were presented. Don Balmer, a Political Science professor from Lewis & Clark College was instrumental in the ongoing operations of the organization, as well as the assembly of this set of records. As of 2013 the organization was still operating out of the Lewis & Clark College Political Science department.

The collection contains materials from 1948-2011. PNWPSA Individuals identified throughout the collection include Jon Cunningham, Daniel Ogden, Donald Balmer, George Condon, Charles McKinley, Maure Goldschmidt, Henry Angus, Hugh Bone, Charles Martin, Thomas Payne, Frank Munk, Robert Fluno, Donald Farmer, Curtis Johnson, and many others. Also included are “A Brief History of the Pacific Northwest Political Science Association,” a “Questionnaire On Teaching of Washington History and Government,” and a poli-sci themed spoof on C. S. Lewis’ The Screwtape Letters.
