Historical Note
The California Department of Fish and Game evolved out of the 1852 Game Act which eventually protected birds, ducks, elk, deer, antelope, salmon runs, and trout in all counties of California. In 1870, the Board of Fish Commissioners was formed and over the next three decades was given the responsibility of handling hunting and fishing licenses in the state. The Board of Fish Commissioners changed its name to the Fish and Game Commission in 1909 and a division was established in 1927. It was not until 1951 that its status was elevated to the Department of Fish and Game as a result of the Reorganization Act.
