- Summary
- The materials in this collection consist of fieldwork projects throughout the state that are tied to projects developed and produced by the Folk and Traditional Arts Program at the Idaho Commission on the Arts. Generally, folklife fieldwork projects gather primary source information about a particular community connected by either place, occupation, cultural expression, ethnicity, or practice. The projects serve the purpose of discovery, documentation, and preservation of the state's traditional cultural heritage and legacy, as well as the basis for larger agency projects such as exhibits, books, and future grant recipients. The fieldwork collections are part of the Idaho Folklife Archives, a partnership between Special Collections and Archives at Boise State University's Albertsons Library and the Folk and Traditional Arts Program at the Idaho Commission on the Arts.

Content Description
These interviews span the life of the Folk and Traditional Arts Program. Projects are often grouped together by connecting themes: general place or region, occupation, family or ethnic heritage, specific practice or cultural expression, or a combination thereof.
The components of a fieldwork project generally include an audio interview of the practitioners, contact information of participants, release forms for all those interviewed, photos and/or short film clips, field notes from the fieldworker, and often a project summary or final report.
Historical Note
Generated through over 40 years of folklore fieldwork and programs conducted by the Arts Commission, the Idaho Folklife Collection gathers audio recordings, transcriptions, photo and video documentation, release forms and associated paperwork, ephemera, and related material objects that document the traditional culture, beliefs, occupational skills, and expressive traditions of individuals and communities across Idaho. This collection does and will include unique primary source material and field research focused on, among other subjects, traditional and vernacular music, dance, crafts, foodways, and material culture of the people of Idaho, from long settled to new immigrant communities.
The goal of the partnership between Albertsons Library's Special Collections and Archives and the Arts Commission's Traditional Arts Program is to create a publicly accessible archive of past, current, and future Idaho folk arts and heritage.
