Historical Note
Henry L. Newman (1835-1910) was a banker and cattle rancher. He had banking interests in Leavenworth, Kansas; Joplin and St. Louis, Missouri; Salt Lake City, Utah; and El Paso, Texas. He was involved in the cattle trade in Colorado, Nebraska, Montana, Texas, New Mexico and Mexico. Newman's brothers Ezekiel S. and George Thomas and his son Henry L. Newman, Jr. were partners and officers in various Newman business ventures.
Content Description
The H.L. Newman collection contains biographical and autobiographical information about Henry L. Newman and his family, written by Newman and his granddaughter, Sally Lewis. Also included are business and legal documents about ranches in Dakota, Nebraska, New Mexico, and Texas; business correspondence (1867-1911); and photographs of the Newman family, the Gomez (MF) ranch in Texas, and other Newman ranches in the southwest. In addition there is an account of a trip to the Standing Rock Indian Agency and a story written by H.L. Newman for his daughter, Edith Newman (Reynolds).
