Summary
This collection contains material that was collected by Dee Taylor in his capacity as a Professor of Anthropology at the University of Montana-Missoula and as Department Chair from the 1950s to the 1990s . Much of this collection contains documentation on research and excavations that Taylor was part of both in his capacity as an archaeology professor and as a member serving in the Montana State Historic Preservation Office. Surveys and photographic material are present along with field notes.

Biographical Note

Dee Calderwood Taylor was born on December 28, 1922 to Ephraim and Eunice Taylor in Coalville, Utah. He married Betty Powell and the couple had two children, Mark and Betty Dee. Taylor joined the Air Corps Reserves in 1942 prior to attending college. He attended the University of Utah and studied anthropology, receiving his B.A. in 1951 and his M.A. in 1953. He attended the University of Michigan and earned his Ph.D., then served as a post-doctoral researcher until 1957 and was hired as a professor of anthropology at the University of Montana-Missoula that same year.

Taylor was a prominent figure in the ethnology and archaeology of the Rocky Mountain Region and the Northern Plains. He became chair of the Department of Anthropology in 1985 and held the position until his death. An accomplished researcher, scholar, and instructor, he founded the Montana Archaeological Society and was active with the Society for American Archaeology, the Governor’s Advisory Committee for the Preservation of Historic Sites (Montana), the State Historical Preservation Office, the Montana Sites Advisory Council, the Montana Archaeological Resources Council, and the Montana Historical Society.

Dee Taylor passed away on March 6, 1991 of cardiac arrest.

Content Description

This collection contains material that was collected by Dee Taylor in his capacity as University of Montana – Missoula Department of Anthropology Chair and professor and as a member of various state and anthropological associations and offices. Series I, Department of Anthropology, contains two subseries. The first subseries, General Departmental Files, contains materials relating to the implementation of certain programs and methods within the department along with correspondence and collections information. Subseries 2, State Historic Preservation Office Contracts, contains the documentation for the operational contracts between the Department of Anthropology at the University of Montana – Missoula and the State Historic Preservation Office regarding the archaeological repository and university-sponsored digs. Series II, Teaching Files, contains unique teaching materials utilized by Dee Taylor in his courses. Included in this series are photographs of a Tabletop Archaeology class set up and some example excavation site drawings. Series III, Cultural Resource Management, contains documents and reports that Dee Taylor reviewed in his role with the State Historic Preservation Office. Some of these reports overlap with Taylor’s research in Series IV. Series IV, Excavations and Studies, contains photographs, reports, and research materials pertaining to Taylor’s archaeological digs and studies. Included in this series are the Yellowstone Archaeological Reconnaissance Study and Kootenai Forest Excavation reports, and photographs pertaining to the studies and digs where University of Montana students were involved in a learning capacity. Materials which are dated after Taylor’s death in 1991 are the result of projects which Taylor started and were finished by the subsequent department chair following his death.

Custodial History

This collection was removed from Dee Taylor’s office by the Department of Anthropology at the University of Montana-Missoula following his death and transferred to Archives and Special Collections.

Acquisition Information

This collection was transferred from Taylor’s office to Archives and Special Collections by the Department of Anthropology at the University of Montana.

Future Additions

No future additions are expected.

Processing Note

This collection was processed in 2025. During processing, materials were rehoused into archival folders and boxes. Photograph negatives were placed in acid-free envelopes and prints were separated with acid-free paper. Published papers and generic lecture notes were not retained. Student papers and exams were not retained. The collection was arranged in series largely reflecting the original order of the collection as it was received by the Archives, with most original folder titles maintained.

During processing a thorough review of the collection was conducted to identify materials relating to Native American burial sites and other sensitive materials relating to Native Americans. This resulted in the restriction of one folder.
