Historical Note

Alice Helen Spencer Herrick was born in 1910 in Shasta County, California. For many years she was a pre-school teacher, first with the WPA in California during the depression, then for a Philadelphia school district. Once back in California she began researching her own northern California pioneer history and started publishing articles. This included a Herrick Family newsletter that was distributed to a good share of her 54 Herrick cousins and their families. She also helped organize family reunions for the descendants of the 1863 Herrick wagon train from Iowa to Red Bluff, CA. and was a member of the Shasta County Historical Society. Many of her articles were published in their magazine Covered Wagon. Herrick died in 2006 at the age of 96.
