Historical Note

Kevin G. Barnhurst graduated from Brigham Young University in 1975 with a B.A. in Latin American Studies. He then went on to graduate school in Mass Communications at the same school. During this time period he headed the establishment and subsequent publication of The New Messenger and Advocate, a Mormon themed publication which, shortly after its inception, merged with anothered Mormon related magazine, Sunstone. This mainly occurred in 1977-1978. Later Barnhurst went on to get his Ph.D. and then to teach at various universities, one of which, the University of Illinois in Chicago, is where he is currently employed and serves as the head of the department of communication. The Barnhurst papers contain information about his early professional life as a writer and student. His journal entries provide insight into his development as a creative writer and teacher.
