Historical Note

In 1968, Elsa Levinson, chairwoman of the Women’s Division for the Jewish Federation of Seattle, approached a University of Washington Historian with the idea of creating a Jewish Historical Society and Museum. She was referred to Richard C. Berner, head of the University Archives and Manuscripts Division. Berner envisioned a collection of primary sources documenting the Jewish community. This tied in with his vision of documenting various ethnic groups throughout the region which were underrepresented in the collection. The Seattle Jewish History Project was created.

Spearheaded by volunteers from the Jewish Federation Women’s Division and then supported by staff members from the UW Manuscripts division, the early efforts of the project was to collect oral histories from longtime Jewish community members. Gradually, the focus expanded to also collecting the records of the synagogues and large Jewish organizations in the area. Later, personal papers and photographs, albeit copies, were collected as well.

In 1978, the exhibit “Ancestry and Achievement: An Exhibit of the Early Beginnings of the Seattle Jewish Community” was held at Suzzallo Library to showcase the first decade of collecting. The exhibit ran all summer and many groups were brought in to see it. It received a great response from the Jewish community as it showcased what an archives actually was. Donations to the collections increased, not only from Seattle but from Jewish communities from around the State.

The growing interest and excitement from this 1978 exhibit coalesced in the formation of the Washington State Jewish Historical Society in 1980 to support the Jewish Archives as part of its broader goal to “discover, preserve and disseminate the history of the Jews of Washington State.” The Society supports the Archives financially and creates programming and exhibits based on the materials from the Archives. After the 1978 exhibit, for example, a local philanthropist approached the Federation to fund a book on the history of the Seattle Jewish community. In 2003, this book was published. Sponsored by the Society, Family of Strangers was written by 3 local Jewish authors and it is the bible of Seattle Jewish History.

In 2010, the agreement between Special Collections and the Historical Society was formalized and spelled out the responsibilities of each party. The Historical Society’s Archives Committee actively collects materials from the community, including conducting oral histories. They also provide a part-time Archivist who works with Special Collections’ staff to manage the collection. For its part, Special Collections assimilates the Jewish Archives into its holdings, storing them in their facilities and providing physical and intellectual access according to their policies and procedures as well as office space and support for the archivist.

In 2011, the Jewish Archives Project was renamed the Washington State Jewish Archives.
