Historical Note

Benjamin F. Hake (1895-1973) was a geologist whose career mainly focused on oil exploration and development. Hake served as a guide fro the Wyoming Geological Survey during his College years. He worked for Marland Oil Company in Mexico, 1921-1929, and for Gulf Refining Company, starting in 1934. During World War II he served with the United States Armry Corps of Engineers on construction of the Alaska Highway. Hake was chief of Gulf Oil Corporation's Land and Exploration Branch's Production Department from 1951-1953; Special Assistant from 1953-1956; and General Manager of the Bolivian Gulf Oil Company in La Paz, Bolivia, from 1956-1959.

Collection includes biographical information, such as certificates and awards, maps, correspondence, speeches, legal documents and printed materials. Photographs and slides show work on the Alaska Highway; geological studies of the California Coast Range; packing trips in Alberta, Canada, and the Bighorn Mountains in Wyoming; the Canol Project in the Yukon and MacKenzie Mountains; the geological survey of Wyoming in 1916; and oil drilling operations in Alberta, Argentina, Bolivia, and Michigan.
