Sydney W. and Mildred B. Angleman photograph collection, 1900-1999

Sydney W. Angleman was born on May 20, 1902, in Plainfield, New Jersey, to Winfield Scott and Erene Johnstone Angleman. Angleman's mother, Erene Angleman (1876-1967), was an accomplished poet. Sydney Angleman received his B.A. from Amherst College in 1923 and his MA and Ph.D. from University of California, Berkeley, in 1925 and 1937. He was also awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from the University of Utah in 1968. Angleman taught English at the University of Utah from 1927 until his retirement in 1970. He also served in administrative roles at the University of Utah: first as dean of the University of the College of English and director of Education, and then, in 1961, as associate dean of the College of Letters and Science. He held this position until 1967, when he resumed teaching. Additionally, Angleman was a member of the fraternity Theta Alpha Phi at the university of Utah. Sydney Angleman died in May 1971.

Mildred Louise Bradford Angleman was born on December 8, 1897 in Portsmouth, Ohio to Charles W. and Elizbeth Green Bradford. She grew up in California, where she attended the John H. Francis Polytechnic High School and was active in girls hiking and outdoor groups. Mildred attended the University of California, Berkeley, and graduated with an MA in 1926. Mildred and Sydney met when attending Berkeley at the same time; the two married on September 19, 1925. The two had one child, Winfield Bradford Angleman. Mildred Bradford Angleman died on June 23, 1981.
