Biographical Note
Bertram Francis Griffin was born in Los Angeles, California, in 1932, and grew up in Portland, Oregon. During World War II, his father served in the U.S. Army, and the family lived on military bases in California. Griffin received a bachelor's degree from Mount Angel Seminary in St. Benedict, Oregon, in 1953, and a master's degree from St. Thomas Seminary, in Kenmore, Washington, in 1957. He was ordained as a priest that same year. Griffin received his doctorate in canon law from the Lateran University in Rome, Italy, in 1964. He then returned to Portland and served as a pastor at the Madeleine Church (1957-1961), St. Mary's Cathedral (1964-1966), St. Andrew Catholic Church (1970-1983), St. Pius X Catholic Church (1984-1996), and St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church (1996-2000). In addition, he was chancellor of the Archdiocese of Portland from 1971 to 1975. He also taught at Mount Angel Seminary and at Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. Griffin died in 2000.

Content Description
This oral history interview with Bertram F. Griffin was conducted by Jim Strassmaier at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Portland, Oregon, in six sessions from July 12 to August 30, 1995. The interview was conducted as part of the Legacy of Hope: Catholics and Social Justice Project, which collected interviews with Catholic clergy and social justice activists in Oregon about their work on social action in the Roman Catholic tradition.
In this interview, Griffin discusses his reasons for joining the Catholic priesthood. He talks about his experiences at Mt. Angel Seminary and at the Lateran University in Rome, Italy, then speaks about his activities after returning to Portland in 1964. He discusses his work as chancellor for the Archdiocese of Portland from 1971 to 1975, including applying the reforms of Vatican II; projects related to social justice that were administered by the Archdiocese; and assisting conscientious objectors during the Vietnam War. He speaks extensively about serving as pastor at St. Andrew Catholic Church from 1970 to 1983, including working with the Albina Ministerial Alliance, and his relationship with leaders in Portland's Black community, including Ron Herndon and the Reverend John Jackson. He then discusses serving as pastor at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Cedar Mill, Oregon, from 1984 to the time of the interview.

In the first interview session, conducted on July 12, 1995, Griffin discusses his family background and early life in Portland, including his education at Catholic schools and the importance of reading in his family. He also talks about moving to various cities in California with his family during World War II, before returning to Portland. He describes the work his father did for the U.S. Army during the war. He speaks extensively about his reasons for joining the Catholic priesthood, about his early studies toward that goal, and about his experiences studying at Mt. Angel Seminary.

He shares his experience studying canon law at the Lateran University in Rome, Italy, in the early 1960s. He discusses the reforms of Vatican II, which were implemented after the Second Vatican Council concluded in 1965. He speaks about his activities after returning to Portland in 1964, and about readjusting to life in the United States and the U.S. Catholic Church. He also talks about Father Thomas Tobin.
